Plant Update

Here are some pictures of our plants that we have started mostly from seed. We have had some successes and some failures along the way. First I would like to say that "Chompers" our venous fly trap has not helped as much as anticipated but he is eating away, as you can see in the picture below. (Yes that is a dead fruit fly)

Our shamrock has bloomed as you can see pictured.

Now for an update on the herbs... these have proved to be the most difficult. So far Parsley and Dill has been growing well. (Pictured) Rosemary, Thyme, and Basil have either stalled or died. But we have started a new round of each.

What I have learned... when watering make sure you do not over water. That will get you some fungus and also fruit flies. Then if you under water obvious things will happen. Here is the tricky part... if you allow the soil to dry out between watering's (as you should), when you water again the soil doesn't want to soak up water. It just flows right through and it appears to be watered enough. So you need to let it drain and water over and over again until it is completely saturated. So drainage is the key! I have been watering ours in the sink. Water the plant... walk away... water... repeat until the soil is dark.

I have recently started doing this, I will report back with the results later.

Note: I am growing this in Ohio pretty much where the sun doesn't shine ever! See this past post. So I am hoping when the temperature changes so will the luck of our growing.

Plant Update: A Few New Friends

We have been continuing to try to teach Isabella how plants grow and at the same time gain some valuable herbs for our kitchen. Isabella has been able to take some of the leaves off of our basil plant and put them directly into our pasta sauce. It has been helping a little with her picking things out of her food. (Cilantro Pictured)

We did add a few new plants to our crop. One is for some people somewhat scary, a Venus Fly Trap! I guess the first question is why would we ever get one? Well they eat the little gnats that start showing up when you over water your plants. (No... not me! *wink wink) Isabella has been very hesitant about this plant. She likes looking at it but does not like it being too close.

Another fan favourite is our new Shamrock.

Plant Update

We have decided to put our seedlings in pot now. Isabella transferred them and then we moved them outside since it was just a nice weekend.

As a reminder, your house plants love the rain better then your tap water! They also love the fresh air. Open your windows on nice days and freshen up the air in your house. We have started doing it and it makes a world of difference. Did you know? "Because our houses and offices are sealed so tight for energy efficiency, fumes build up, leading to indoor air pollution levels as much as 5 times greater than air pollution outside." This is just one out of thousands of articles online. Does 5 times seem a little extreme or a stretching of the real truth? Probably or only when you are painting in a small area. But do I believe in fresh air, Yes.

Plant Update

Our plants are growing well so far. Some sad news was the first sprouted plant had to be removed becuase it happened to be a stray seed. We put that plant in another container we hope it lives.
