It's the New Zoo
We have been frequenting a local pet shop so we can expose the girls to different animal up close. Today we were able to pet a guinea pig, a hairless rat, and a chinchilla (pictured). By far the girls liked the chinchilla the most.
Did you know that the guinea pig has been domesticated as early as 5000 BC as food? Since the 1960s, efforts have been made to increase consumption of the animal outside South America where they were first domesticated.
The international trade in chinchilla fur goes back to the 16th century. The fur from chinchillas is popular in the fur trade due to its extremely soft feel, because they have about 60 hairs sprouting from each hair follicle.
